At the end of July, Reuters reported that Hershey’s, one of the biggest candy suppliers in the world, was facing a shortage of key ingredients, such as edible oil and cocoa. Reuters also reported that Hershey’s was experiencing other supply chain issues, which would make the manufacturer unable to fully meet consumer demands this Halloween. It goes without saying that this report instilled fear in many. In response, many people ran out to the stores to stock up on those assortment packages of Halloween candy and chocolate. If this is the first time hearing of a Halloween candy shortage in 2022, you might be feeling a little fearful as well right now. After all, you don’t want to disappoint trick-or-treaters when they knock on your door on Halloween.
Is There a Halloween Candy Shortage in 2022?
Before you run to a grocery store to hunt for and stockpile Halloween candy, know there’s some good news. What is it? Well, it turns out that Reuters wasn’t exactly telling the truth when they reported this story. Despite the Reuters report, which cited the Covid crisis and the conflict in Ukraine as the source for the candy shortage, Hershey’s stated that not only are they NOT expecting a shortage, but that they expect they will have more than enough candy for the 2022 holiday season.
As a matter of fact, the Senior Director of Corporate Communications for The Hershey Company, Allison Kleinfelter, stated that the candy giant will have “even more seasonal candy products available to the consumer this year than last year.”
Candy Lovers Rejoice
The rumors of an impending candy shortage were likely sparked by a remark that was made during Hershey’s earnings call. During Hershey’s earnings call, it was stated that the manufacturer was making the production of everyday products their top priority.
According to Kleinfelter, the company’s decision to focus on everyday products came about in the spring This is the time of year that the company starts producing products for the upcoming Halloween season, in an effort to boost the on-shelf availability of the products that are most popular among consumers.
Because the company’s everyday products and their seasonal products are made on the same line, The Hershey Company decided to balance out their production of both products in order to ensure that both were available so that they could keep up with consumer demand.
Should You Stock Up on Halloween Candy?
Unless it’s your norm, or you have a serious sweet tooth, there really isn’t a need to stock up on Halloween candy this year. According to Hershey’s, they will be more than able to meet consumer demands, not only in regard to their everyday favorites such as Hershey bars, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit-Kat, Jolly Ranchers, Twizzlers, and the vast array of other candies Hershey’s makes.
In fact, Hershey’s will also be able to satisfy the demand for Halloween-themed candies, as well such as their standard candies that are wrapped in seasonal packages, and/or crafted in seasonal shapes. The world-renowned candy manufacturer has even hinted at offering an array of new Halloween-themed candies in 2022.
