where your food comes from Food is one of the things that keep us alive from day to day. Not to mention, it is something that we cannot live without. Food is where we primarily get our energy and nutrients that our body benefits from. Eating foods with vitamins and minerals also helps us strengthen our immune system. Some examples of these foods are apples, bananas, oranges, lemons, strawberries, kiwis, eggs, and many more!

Do You Know Where Your Food Comes From?

Knowing that we benefit from the vitamins and minerals that our foods provide is good news. However, it is also crucial for us to know where the foods we eat come from. Ask yourself these questions: Where does our food come from? Does knowing where it came from help us in any way? Will it benefit me if I know where it came from? These might be mundane questions, but these are questions that you should be concerned with. Here are reasons why knowing where your food comes from will benefit not only you but also the whole family and your communities:

Acknowledges farms and food industry workers

Knowing where the food on your table comes from will allow you to appreciate it that much more. At the same time, it also helps you understand how hard it is to be a farmer, fisherman, plant worker, etc. Acknowledging where your food comes from will help you bring attention to the efforts of the people who produced the foods you are eating.

For your safety

Take a look at the ingredients of the food that you buy at grocery stores and markets. Pay close attention to it, especially when these are processed foods. In fact, there may be ingredients that you may find unappetizing or may have ingredients that you are allergic to. Knowing where the food came from will tell you about their sanitary standards, cooking processes, and the type of environment the food is produced in. With this information, you may gauge whether the food you will be eating is safe for you and your family’s health.

Organic

Knowing where the food comes from will also tell you whether it is produced organically or not. Some farms and other production plants produce genetically modified products, while others prefer to grow organic foods. Producers of genetically modified foods produce such products for a lot of reasons. Some do this to incorporate more vitamins and minerals inside the food, while others do this because genetically modified products grow faster. Others may argue that genetically modified products are hazardous to your overall health, while others say that they aren’t. That is why it is important to research where your products are produced from and know whether they are grown organically or not.

Cost

The place where the food is from also tells you about its price. Some foods are made only in one specific area, or the kind of that product is only found in that place. Foods made from only one place can be limited and extremely expensive. The price can also vary depending on whether it is grown locally or not. Imported products tend to be more costly than locally grown products. Knowing where the food you want to eat came from will help you gauge its price. Therefore, allowing you to choose what type of foods fit your budget.

Eating Local

When you say eating local, this means eating foods that are locally made from your community. It can benefit you in a lot of ways. Eating local means you do not have to travel far to get food. Some chains and other places can be far away from you. Getting food from these establishments can cost you more money and gas than it would when getting it from local food establishments. Eating from local businesses not only helps you save money but also helps support local businesses and the local economy. Furthermore, eating from closer local food establishments can help you save the environment and save gas. It’s like hitting two birds with one stone!
